As a dog photographer in Devon and the South West, I’ve worked with every type of dog you can imagine - the shy and reactive ones, the energetic ones, the young ones and everything in between. My sessions are designed to be relaxed, playful and completely tailored to your dog's unique personality.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at how I make every dog photoshoot a success, no matter what!
At Kelly Marie Photography, there’s no rush and no pressure. When you arrive at one of my gorgeous outdoor locations in Devon, the first thing I do is let your dog sniff around, explore and get comfortable.
Some dogs settle quickly, while others need a little longer - and that’s absolutely fine. Giving your dog time to relax helps me capture genuine, natural expressions rather than stiff or forced poses. It’s all part of creating authentic, joyful images that you’ll love forever.
While a few nice "sit and stay" portraits are lovely, the real magic happens in the natural moments - a wagging tail, a playful leap or an excited action shot! As a specialist in dog photography across Devon and the South West, I focus on storytelling: capturing the spirit, character and quirks that make your dog so special.
I've put together a few top tips to help your dog (and you) make the most out of your session with me!
1.Take your dog for a walk first
If your dog is young or an energetic breed, a good walk before the session can help burn off excess energy, making it easier for your dog to focus and relax when we start taking photos.
2.Bring their favourite treats and toys
Familiar smells and rewards make the experience positive and fun. If your dog has a special toy or a particular treat they love, bring it along!
3.Keep Things Relaxed
Dogs pick up on our energy. If you’re relaxed and having fun, they will be too - even if they’re a little cheeky or excitable at times!
I will do everything I can to create a relaxed environment on the session, and often receive feedback from clients that suggests I do this well. Have a read of my testimonials to see what others had to say about their experiences!
4.Safety first!
I only choose dog-friendly locations in Devon that are safe, spacious and enjoyable for your dog. Whether it’s up on the moors, on a woodland trail, or one of Devon or Cornwall's iconic beaches, your dog's wellbeing is always my top priority. We will discuss and agree the best location together, based on your dogs needs and what you'd like to achieve from your photoshoot.
For nervous or reactive dogs, I offer quieter session times or more secluded spots (such as a secure field) to ensure they feel completely at ease. If needed, leads can stay on during the shoot — I can magically edit them out afterwards during post-processing!
7 month old Willow simply couldn’t sit still during her tulip mini shoot; she was so excited! It also wasn't safe for her to be off her lead and harness, so instead of fighting it, we embraced it. I captured some lovely shots of her in between the mayhem and you would never be able to tell (it only takes me a second to get that shot!), with a mixed of action shots and candid snaps - pure joy!
Lettie was a little shy when we first met. We chose a location where she was very familiar - which was the iconic back beach of Teignmouth. We met at sunrise when we knew it would be quiet and took things slow, giving her space and letting her explore. Within no time, she trusted me enough to capture the softest, most soulful portraits you could imagine - she even got into some of the boats of her own accord and we managed to get this fantastic shot!
At Kelly Marie Photography, I believe that the best dog photos come from embracing who your dog truly is - playful, stubborn, cuddly, bouncy or calm. There’s no need for perfect behaviour. All I need is your dog, just as they are.
